Mokkou Yamagen
One of the most rewarding things about making upholstery fabric is seeing all the beautiful and varied pieces of furniture it ends up on.
And they don’t come much more special than this little bench by Mokkou Yamagen.
This beautiful piece is made in walnut and brass with upholstery in our Aerial Belmont - used A side up. I love the lightness of the raised seat - floating above the structure.
Mokkou Yamagen is a woodworking workshop based in Yokohama and specializing in finely detailed solid wood furniture and cabinetry. The studio was established in 2012 by Genki and Mizuki Nishiyama and has fast developed a well-deserved reputation for fine craftsmanship and a real affinity for materials.
The image above shows the wooden elements of the bench - prior to assembly. As you can see, all of the joints and details are immaculate.
Mokkou Yamagen’s designs are clean and contemporary, but they also carry with them the all the tradition of the finest Japanese craft.
Looking through their portfolio I am particularly drawn to this one-armed chair. I love the proportions of the low seat and the high back - even more apparent in the charming scale model below.
The craftsmanship is evident in each stage of construction - here below you see the gentle curves of the chair seat taking shape.
The upholstery work for the bench was carried out by Tokyo based upholstery studio Fujitake works.
All in all a perfect piece
